Unpacking and waking up in Iskele

The camera equipment was the first I unpacked. Then I tried to figure out the directions, the water, the land, and my bedroom. The window exterior metal shades opened to bright sunlight in a neighborhood where the sea met the land, and a place to walk, sit and eat, splash in the water or fish.

Eskele is a village in the district of Urla. Urla is a section of Izmir, previously known as Smyrna. As I understand. This was my home base for 3 weeks, hosted by Doug & Gulbin Swartzendruber, a cousin of mine and his Turkish spouse, Gulbin. They made the Turkish experience for me, and I’m forever grateful.

Walks and food here helped me adjust to a very different place halfway around the world. Recorded history is evident every where and about five feet down. A wall, or building or some antiquity.
